Library Ruckus by JustaSuta Library Ruckus by JustaSuta
A school project, done in Illustrator.

The prompt here was to design an iPad cover for a specific demographic. The one I chose was 'Bookworm' and to me, a bookworm is defined by the books they read, old and new and the idea that their stories can come to life.

I had wanted to paint this, to give it a kind of Baroque look but I had painted my previous project and this would have taken more time than I had. I wish I could have; I've learned that Illustrator is difficult to work with when it comes to really complicated stuff, which is the stuff that I like to do.

All the books in this Illustration are real and almost all of them are readable(some of the fonts didn't come out right), so those who have the cover can just turn it around and discover new books! I mostly put classics in there but they can be easily changed.

Also: A lot of the lines end in squares like illustrator does that. >C I'll fix them eventually.

This is really crazy and noisy. I can tell it's supposed to be a library, but with all the colors and everything, I think personally, I would move on to a less crazy cover, even though I myself enjoy reading and consider myself a bookworm, even though I find it difficult to find the time to sit down and enjoy a book lately. I also would like to point out that I believe texturing the octopus was unnecessary, but most of the book references that I see I either understand the reference or I can create one for myself. Like Atlas, War of the Worlds, the weasel could be Jink from Cornelia Funke's Inkheart series. After looking at this image for a longer time, the fleur de lis wallpaper that you chose for the library starts to stand out and I don't like it but I can't bring myself to dislike it necessarily, if that makes any sense.

Note: my screen is very small, so I can only see parts of the image at a time.

There's so much going on that wherever I look, there is always something which pleases the eye. But at the same time, sometimes it seems so busy that it seems more like a mess rather than the typical image that we get when we think "library" or "bookworm." The idea that bookworms just continue to grow and get more complicated isn't represented with a progressive image but rather one static image. I feel like a growing image, maybe where this bookworm starts really simple and then becomes complicated would have been better. An image with more order would also be more pleasing for consumers, who I feel are more likely to be attracted to the simple yet "deep" in meaning. I think you went into this with a lot of energy and managed to display a wonderful array of your abilities, though, and it definitely says "Justyna."

i love how detailed this is, and the idea. also very nice how every book actually has a title. even though i couldn't read all of them cuz it cut off some of the top and sides.
